What is God up to in our neighbourhoods? A book review
Missional – Joining God in the Neighbourhood by Alan Roxburgh (Baker Books, 2011) Right, where to start with this one? I have to say that I am still unsure what I think about this book. It is peppered with the usual painfully trendy phrases you associate with people who make a living out of,…
Does social action lead us away from the gospel?
Very often I am asked what my ‘position’ is on social justice and the gospel. Usually, I will feign a quizzical look before asking said person, ‘what do you mean by that?’ Generally, what they mean is how do I balance ‘loving people and providing for their needs over…
Taking the risk with your neighbours
I enjoyed this stimulating post on taking risks in reaching out to those around us. Read it here. Not sure of the ‘people of peace’ as a biblical concept but his fears and his approach to life as a Christian still resonate.
Doing Justice in Poor neighbourhoods (1)
A friend sent me this today about the gentrification of many poor housing estates in the world. His context is in the USA but i feel the force of some of this for the ‘locals’ of Niddrie and many who have been pushed out by recent redevelopment. Are you a hipster? The most important question for any church planter!
Take this survey here…For your information I scored no points! I am about as ‘unhip’ as they come! Well chuffed!
Driscoll on Christians & Alcohol
For those of you who know me well I have been quite a fan of Driscoll. Learning from the life of Jonathan Edwards (4)
Part IV: War, Princeton, Death & Other Stuff All this drama was played against a colourful worldwide backdrop. In 1754 the international scene was becoming very unstable. Benjamin Franklin met with leaders from 7 other colonies to discuss the French intentions in the frontiers. The English were…
Advice from a pastors wife
I found this little link online recently and thought it may be helpful. Check it out here.
Why all the fuss around church planting?
Church planting is very sexy at the moment, and this is the source of much amusement (and bemusement) for those of us who have been in the game for any length of time. Part of me wonders where all these ‘fans’ have been for the last decade and the other part of me is thankful, seeking to take full advantage of our new found ‘hero’ status. As I…
Should we preach from full notes or is that unspiritual???
I know many pastors who think that preaching from full notes is a real no-no. They think that it curbs and inhibits the work of the Holy Spirit in preaching and ties people down. I couldn’t disagree more and I always preach from a full manuscript and I bet that if you asked my members on a…
