Doing Justice in Poor neighbourhoods (1)
A friend sent me this today about the gentrification of many poor housing estates in the world. His context is in the USA but i feel the force of some of this for the ‘locals’ of Niddrie and many who have been pushed out by recent redevelopment. Housing prices are so high here that even we can’t get on the housing ladder!
Redeeming Tiredness
by A Constable Work on schemes is tiring. The people we deal with everyday have some sort of drug or alcohol dependency and/or one or more mental issues. When you are building a relationship with someone from that kind of background you aren’t going to be asked very often how you’re doing? The relationship, at least to begin with, is very one sided as you sew into their…
Driscoll on Christians & Alcohol
For those of you who know me well I have been quite a fan of Driscoll. However, I have been put off him recently by some of his behaviour, outbursts and the justification he offers behind some of his language. He seems to be getting increasingly out of control (but maybe it’s me becoming more ‘sensitive’). He has said some silly stuff in the past about…
Old & Young Pastors: Seeking the gospel in our conflict
I have been reading a lot about this topic lately (not that I have been having any problems with old pastors). But I think that there is solid wisdom in this great article from Trevin wax, fast becoming a favourite blogger of mine. Read what he has to say here.
Niddrie: A Welcoming Church?
This is an interesting little dilemma for NCC – well I say dilemma, more something I am musing on currently as I am reading. Lots of the books I am reading on church planting are dedicating whole chapters to the art of ‘welcoming’. It seems like it is a big thing, particularly in the USofA. Generally, I have not messed with the ‘welcoming…

‘Plastic’ Calvinists Kill Evangelism, Not Calvinism!
If you want to start a fight in a church, start a debate on the Doctrine of God’s Election. If you are not sure what that means then read how The Belgic Confession briefly summarises it: ‘We believe that all the posterity of Adam, being thus fallen into perdition and ruin by the sin of our first…
Question Time – Niddrie Stylee!
Host: ‘Welcome to this night special edition of QT where we are operating from one of Scotland’s most deprived housing schemes. We will be discussing, amongst other things, the recent riots and what we, as a society, can learn from them. On the panel tonight we have a local drugs support worker, a community support worker, a mental health support worker, a social worker,…

London’s Burning – A Biblical View
Every single newspaper is full of headlines about the riots that started in London and are now spreading to other cities in the UK. There is much hand wringing and political point scoring going on. The Left wingers are using it as an opportunity to disparage the government cuts (conveniently…
